Trekking in the Gorges of Fara San Martino

Calls gorges of San Martino are placed at the entrance of one of the longest valleys Apennine, the Valley of the Holy Spirit from Fara San Martino leading from the summit of Monte Amaro with a drop of 2300 meters. The valley is so long that takes 3 names: Valley of the Holy Spirit in its initial part, Valle di Macchia Lunga in its central portion and Valle Cannella in its terminal portion.

The two rock walls that serve as access to the valley are far apart, at the narrowest point, circa 2 meters and continue for about 50 meters until the opening of the valley. This situation helps to give a sense of great suggestion to who is there to pass for the first time.

This particular and impressive entrance hides one of the most beautiful valleys, most striking, more varied and more interesting than nature can man reserve.

in the year 50 this place suffered environmental damage due to the establishment of a quarry which for several years take away the rock to build the cliffs to the port of Ortona. Today, despite the losses suffered, still he manages to give us the suggestion of a kind if not pristine, certainly wild and mysterious.
At the entrance of the gorge you can see the ruins of an ancient gateway. The gorges in fact also formed the entrance to the monastery and the church of St. Martin in the Valle mail about fifty meters over the same gorges, adjacent to a rocky wall that sheltered.

At the top of said front door travelers could see from the 1500 a painting of St. Martin that clearly indicated to enter a territory under the fief of the Monastery of St. Martin in the Valley. The big floods 700 and the start of the 800 have wiped out this front door and returned there, only a few decades ago, the ruins of that input and the monastery where they still are in place archaeological excavations and restoration work.

This excursion will creep within this long canyon up to share 1050 m.s.l.m. in locality “Walloons mouth” where a cool beech forest it will restore after the beautiful walk.
