History and nature at the foot of Mainarde

In the shadow of the imposing Mainarde, the mountain range which marks the southern border of the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise, It nestles in the picturesque Lake Castel San Vincenzo. From the nature of the source of the river Volturno, a walking path will lead us to the extraordinary archaeological site of San Vincenzo al Volturno, considered the most important archaeological site early medieval Europe. Walking among the ruins of the monastic complex and the city founded in the eighth century, We run through a fascinating journey through time, between history and legend.

We'll move on Lake Castel San Vincenzo for a leisurely stroll along its banks and for a picnic that will allow us to relax enjoying the magnificent scenery of Mainarde mirrored on the waters of the lake of Castel San Vincenzo.

Last stop of the day will be the interesting International Museum of World Wars in Rocchetta al Volturno, where with a meticulous work it was put together an exceptional collection of documents, divided, and means that reconstruct the events of the two World Wars, in particular those related to the battles that determined the fall of the Gustav Line between Cassino and the High Volturno.

  • Check the sources of the River Volturno and the beginning of hike 2,5 km
  • Guided tour to the archaeological site of San Vincenzo al Volturno (entrance € 4)
  • Transfer by own car on Lake Castel San Vincenzo and hike of 1 km along the banks of the lake to the area where we will consume picn picnic lunch packed by the participants
  • Transfer by own car in Rocchetta al Volturno. Guided tour of the International Museum of World Wars (entrance € 5).
